This area could too symbolise the plight of the poor, like George Wilson who live among the dirty ashes and so lose their vitality and tone as a result.

As each character is introduced, the differences between them become evident with their dialogue and mannerisms. For example, George Wilson who lives in the Valley is sensed as jade and lifeless, through the clothes that he wears and his copper which are both covered in the ashes.
